Buying an X350 in the UK

Currently I drive a Citroen C6 2.7 V6 TDi Exclusive model, and am looking at replacing it with a Jaguar XJ 2.7 V6 TDi.

In particular the Sovereign model, circa 2007, under 65,000 miles and pref. a LWB model though seems there is few of them about.

Im looking for a few details of info, based around standard specs, and the difference between Executive, Sport, Sovereign models etc. Ive started looking at adverts of cars for sale, but the specs on all these models don;t seem significantly different?

Also the values seem to be extremely varied. Ive seen 2007 cars anywhere between ÂŁ9000 and ÂŁ16,000 for similar cars. Any advice on what to pay for what Im looking for?

Are there any major issues to look out for mechanically when viewing these cars?

Any help would be much appreciated.

Alan

The car was facelifted in March 2007 (new grille and bumpers essentially).
With regards to the LWB you get rear entertainment included (which comprises of independant headrest screens, DVD player, rear armrest media controls were standard but now defunct analogue TV was optional) and I believe heated rear reclining memory seats are std for LWB Sovereigns but not SWB ones but stand to be corrected.
No problems mechanically in 4 yrs of ownership with mine but check suspension especially the rear lower wishbones (see sticky).
Bodywork. ..check for bubbling (filiform) usually at the top of the A posts, bottom front of rear doors (about 3" diagonally from corner), behind rear screen seal half way down C posts (all warranted for 6 yrs if car has full history and paint unbroken)
Good luck

The specs are confusing, aren't they?

Comfort seats, R performance or ruched leather with heaters. I have this last, but not sure the heated option is any benefit.

Bench seats in the back vs individual squabs, again, not sure about these.

Sat nav (or not) which is not very good and costs a fortune to update if using the 'official' Jag discs

Alpine sound system or Premium audio, rather wasted on my deaf ears

Jaguar voice (or not) have yet to find much use for this, and the voice dial for the phone is rubbish.

Bluetooth phone. This is useful.

Electrochromic mirrors are another issue. The door ones work a lot better than the interior one, which I'd rather be able to dip manually as it is always too slow and too bright.

Personally I don't understand the modern passion for fitting enormous wheels with skinny tyres that transmit every imperfection in the road straight to the base of the spine, so would avoid anything with a tyre profile less than 50, but almost everyone else here seems to be on the opposite side of the argument.

The Bi-xenon headlights are good to have, too.

I don't think the (analogue) TV works now in the post digital switch over.

Well I , for one, am with you on this one. I swapped out 20" Sepangs for a set of 18" wheels that looked just as good, (to me anyway), and it transformed the ride. MIne you I bought a Sport, which has harder suspension anyway.

The fifliorm corrosion is a nuisance but not a car killer. You can see it on almost any aluminium vehicle exposed to damp and salt. AIrcraft companies have to take extensive and expensive steps to stop it. Airports never use salt to clear snow.

So how about prices guys? Anyone have any ideas of reasonably accurate values for say a 2007 LWB Sovereign with under 65k on the clock?

I have seen a few LWB Advertised (pre and post 07 facelift) but they dont seem to have the rear entertainment or trays on the rear of the front seats. And most Ive seen just have a rear bench rather than reclining ones.

My current Citroen C6 has the voice control which I never use, and what they call the Lounge Pack which us heated reclining electric rear seats, but tbh no-one ever uses the features.

Im looking LWB simply because my other half brothers and family are taller than 6ft and most big cars are a squeeze for them.

From the photos the only interior differences i see are the sports seats or the sovereign piped seats.

Do all Xj's have these as standard? - Front heated screen, front and rear parking sensors, heated seats, climate, sat nav?

Ref the sat nav, my Citroen uses a disc system too, but Ive always seemed to pick up discs on ebay under ÂŁ100

Cheers

Looking at the 2006 brochure (may not be the last word) rear park assist was standard on all, but the front wasn't fitted to the exec.

There's no mention of heated screens, so I guess they were fitted across the range.

Heated seats weren't listed for the exec.

Climate control was across the range.

Sat nav was standard fit to Sov, XJR and Super V8 but not the exec and sport.

The picnic trays were I was told a ÂŁ975 option and an option that was taken on mine from the spec list when sold new in Jan 2007.They were never std as far as I know even on the LWB and i think the Super V8 as a friend has a super v8 with no trays.
The LWB was either a ÂŁ2250 or ÂŁ2500 option over the same model of the higher specd SWB models. The price gave an extra 6" of legroom and 1" headroom and Rear Entertainment as std from speaking to various people and dealers after I bougt mine in May 2009.
There are (yearly?) Jaguar model launch books available showing the options and std fitments for the different specs for potential buyers usually on ebay etc.

Hey Alan,

I realise this is severely off-topic, but how do you like your C5? Has it been reliable, robust - and fun? I'm a great fan of C5s, especially the 3.0L TT version. Remarkable cars, imho. They are severely under-appreciated here in Australia.

One thing to bear in mind is that not many X350 cars were made over its production life. I think it was around 15,000 in total, with fewer sold in the last years than the first few. So if you are too picky about spec, you might be searching for some time. IMHO, go for condition, service and maintenance history, and mileage first, and goodies second.

Fraser I've seen that figure too, but it doesn't at all agree with the figures quoted in Thorley's Essential Buyer's Gudie to the X350.

This gives a total production of 83556, split between
8786 2.7 Tdvi
12708 3.0 petrol
6366 3.5 petrol
43989 4.2 petrol
10854 4.2 s/c
853 4.2 Daimler

Nigel is usually pretty good about his figures (as well as carrying them around in his head) and of course there's no indication of how many were for export, so 15k may be correct for the UK, but it would be nice to know the source?

I read this figure some time ago. It didn't seem outrageous as one does not see very many of these cars. Clearly it must have been related to UK sales, which then sounds about right. One things for sure;I have never seen a Daimler version.
