Your call I guess, but for the extra ÂŁ130.00 or so, I would go for the upgrade (modified pulley etc.) - you won't risk getting the rattle / drumming back which, even if you only keep the car for a short time, is probably worth th additional cost. Is the car on it's last legs , or are you hoping to sell fairly soon ? If the latter, I would definately go for the modified pulley.

The rattle comes from the tensioner, but the reason the tensioner fails is the pulley wobbles and vibrates the belt, so if you just replace tensione and belt it will stop the rattle but the new tensioner won't last long and you'll have to do it again as it's a fiddly job I'd advise doing it right with the uprated kit

I did a post on this sometime last year.

I used an uprated 2.0d mondeo part from "Gates". Changed the belt and fitted a new tensioner at the same time. No noises or rattles after.

Originally my bottom pulley started to break up (the rubber infill), as an emergency repair I removed the pulley and welded it up (inner to outer). It ran better than ever before or probably since. I changed it after a day or two as it was not balanced, just a temp repair.

Hope this helps.

I I have the dreaded rattle from the pully area. Removed the panel but could not detect any obvious movement in the pully or tensioner area. No noticeable change in tone when selecting a/c. Getting the garage to look at it tomorrow. Any other nolses of note from that area?

when i changed my tensioner kit the pulley wheel was fine but the tensioner was proper kna####ed and making all the noise. i changed for the uprated pulley anyway.
