First action should be to disconnect the battery for five minutes or so, then reconnect and see if the system has re-booted. You'll then have to re-set each of the windows by pressing each down button and holding it until you hear a click, then pull up until the window closes and there's another click. Also re-set the radio by entering the radio code that will(?) have come with your documentation.

 

Thanks for the reply! Is there any way of 'resetting' the trip computer without disconnecting the battery i.e. pulling the fuse (my handbook doesn't mention which supplies the trip computer specifically) or is the 'box' for the trip computer accessible to pull it's loom out? Just worried about upsetting anything else pulling the battery if not absolutely required?

Don't worry too much about the battery disconnect. I have done it a few times and not yet had an issue... As Astro says make sure you have the radio code and reset the windows.

Had a chance this afternoon to try disconnecting the battery, hasn't made any difference to the trip computer functions (or lack of)..

So, does anyone have any thoughts on what might need looking at? And how to suss out if the trip computer is A/ there and B/ Powered and connected?

(I'm assuming if the trip button on the stork has a problem, the reset and A/B burrons should do something??).

One though that came to mind, previous owner had some work done on the fuel system (new pump etc), is there anything with that that could have resulted in the trip computer not functioning (if not put back properly)?

Also, can anyone recommend any independent Jag Specialists in the Cambridge (I'm 10 miles South of) area, need to get a service done at the very least soon so after recommendations.

What relationship does the average fuel consumption shown on the trip meter have to the actual fuel consumption for that journey?

Ive just bought a 2009 2.2 auto estate and wanted to use the trip computer to compare against my last car, After a decent motorway journey + about 40 miles on A roads + a handful or urban miles the trip showed 38 mpg yet when i looked at the amount of fuel i'd put in and the number of miles driven it came out at nearly 46mpg which i's better news.

Ive now refilled it and reset the trip meter so will start checking again but is this 46mpg about right or does it look as though ive just got my sums wrong and it really is just 38 mpg as the trip computer says ?

 

It's possible that either the buttons are for the incorrect message centre, not all are the same, or that the memory in the message centre has become corrupt. You might need a full Mongoose to see if it has been correctly configured.

 

Is that a way of saying that you checked your actual fuel consumption and it worked out to be the same as what the trip computer said for average fuel consumption ?

So can anyone offer any advice to check the trip computer module is correctly powered and working (where is it located, I gather in the drivers instrument panel) and how does one dismantle the stalk to check out the "trip button" I gather the button failing or a wiring fault can lead to the trip computer not working?

On mine, the reset will only work when mpg or trip is displayed. If set to display the car's mileage only, pressing reset has no effect.

 

Ah, interesting, that may point to the trip button on the stalk been the culprit as I know the reset button works (if I go in to the setup screen the reset provides positive input)

Does anyone have any advice on accessing the trip button and the stalk wiring to check and also testing the function further down the wiring?

Replacement stalks are inexpensive - it is extremely unlikely to be the loom

I've got spares, PM if interested

 

Is there anyway to verify it is the button is at fault (e.g. short the connection further down the wiring)? Also are there any guides to replacing the stalk (would want to know whats involved before PM'ing/ordering one!)?

Strangely I had the A: mileage come up briefly in the dash display yesterday (as well as "no phone kit installed" when I hit phone last night! Turned the ignition off and on again and it came back, not that I think it was related).

Have same problem with trip meter, can change from miles to kilometres but will not reset. Have tried pressing button but no luck.

Did you ever have any luck with this? I have the same issue. Additionally, not sure if it's related but my cruise control buttons do nothing...same with that talk/phone & select buttons (but all of which illuminate when lights are on), Seatbelt warning lights don't display, etc etc. I've been relentlessly researching to try and find which fuses/relays these systems use or what controls them....no luck.
