Dear All,

I have just joined the Jag club following purchase of my first XF 2.0D Prestige (65 Reg). Mostly sucked into this due to its high reported mileage. But two days in and having driven about 100 miles it is returning a meagre 28 mpg (on trip computer) on Eco mode mostly with 50-50 motorway miles. The car has 34K on the clock. I am getting worried 😟

That's very very low, mine is returning some excellent mpg.

Driving style has a big impact on the consumption, hard late braking, hard acceleration etc, the little green bars in the instruments are a good way of managing driving style. Even on this mornings stop start commute I saw 55mpg (46 miles trip) and the return is usually closer to 65

Thanks Mark,
Yes that is what I had expected. I know driving style does make a lot of difference. I previously have owned a hybrid and could get the best(close to reported mileage) out of it with my driving style. I did go by the green bars keeping it green almost everytime i accelerate or break. Hence I am worried. I have got a healthcheck booked with Jaguar next week. I fear there Could be a mechanical problem. The car is still in warranty till Nov this year.

Do some basic checks, when cruising at say 60mph, what is the instantaneous consumption showing?

What is the oil level showing?

Is the engine getting up to temperature (indicated)?

It may be that there is a partially blocked DPF as a result of the previous owners usage (hence checking the oil level!).

Good look with the tech!

Thanks reddiesel. I will check the oil levels on dipstick (not sure if i can see this in vehicle information) although there are no warning lights on the dashboard. Will also need to figure out how to check instantaneous mpg. The range that it shows up on a quarter tank of diesel left in the car is 150 miles. Is that what is expected?
Also, a thing that I noticed was my accelerator is relatively tight to press. I wonder if that is just me as i have been driving a fairly old Prius or should i be concerned.

Hi
Just an update on this. Went to the dealers to get a healthcheck done and they said all was good. Didn’t get too much bogged down by the mileage. They said to monitor it over couple of tanks. I reset all my trips and Since then i have done about 50 more miles mostly city roads. My mpg is hovering around 40 mpg. I also monitored my instant mpg cruising at 65mph. It averaged around 50-60mpg on flat road with slight elevation at times. I filled up my tank yesterday (50lit) and the range comes up as 472 miles.
Is this what i should be expecting?

Are you seeing this on the trip computer or measured by refilling the tank?

I'm asking, because I've observed some strange measurements. For instance, 8-10 mile moderate city driving without much traffic - the average mpg for the journey reported (auto mode) is for instance 18mpg where through the entire journey the instantaneous mpg has been oscillating around 30-35 mpg so I struggle to understand how the reported average can be so low. I'm now checking what the actual consumption is: refuel -> drive 200-300 miles -> refulel - calculate manually (I bought the car a week ago).

(my mpg values would be vastly different to your as it's a 3.0 supercharged petrol)

Hi Sourchocolate
I didn’t look at the auto. I have reset my Trip A and monitoring mileage over a period of few days rather than instantaneous. You may get 30-35mpg while the car is in motion but it dramatically drops when you speed up say from roundabout or traffic lights and i guess that is what offsets the total average

Ok i thought of reporting back my verdict on this issue after having driven 3000 miles. My average is at 51mpg(dashboard). And as i said before this is on 60-40 urban:motorway. But i drive in London so the urban part is really congested. My true mpg is about 48. The max i have been able to achieve on single journey is 62mpg. So very happy with the returns. Most of it is normal mode but i have had my part of fun on sports with dynamic control too 😁

For what it's worth, I normally get the range offering around 800+ km for mixed driving (500 miles) with up to 1000 km (625 miles) the most it ever shows after a couple of tanks full of pure motorway driving.

I only ever drive in Dynamic mode! And I have a manual gearbox.

Do check the AdBlue by switching on ignition but do not start the engine, then in the Vehicle Information display look under Service and you should see a reference to the remaining range - it does not show the volume left, only a calculated range. I cannot remember exactly what it says in English, sorry, but it is obvious. This only shows when ignition is on and engine not running. If there is too little AdBlue left you should already be seeing warning messages, so that is probably OK.
